Sri
Lanka
The island of Sri Lanka is covered with
beaches which holidaymakers love.
The resort of Nelaveli on the east
of the island is a popular resort for those wishing to sprawl out in
the sun, relax and take a dip. Water spors lovers might prefer the
slightly less expensive Arugam Bay where from April to September,
there are surfing waves to rival the best.
Formerly known as Ceylon, Sri Lanka is
famous for its tea and its rolling hills are covered with plantations
where colourfully-dressed locals pick the leaves. Beruwela is
about the closest Sri Lanka comes to a traditional resort. It has a
gorgeous beach of honey-coloured sand backed by gently swaying
palms and lush tropical greenery around a sheltered bay.
Kalutara is an up-and-coming resort with a
wonderful, palm fringed beach, although the nightlife remains pretty
low key. It has plenty of beautiful, tropical scenery and several
interesting sights including the world's only hollow Buddhist shrine
and an elegant plantation mansion grandly named Richmond Castle.
Negombo boasts local
culture, history and a beach The main town has
several leftovers from the periods of colonial rule,
when both the Dutch and British stamped their mark
on the island. Nearby are the Muthurajawela
wetlands, where you can about as close as you would
wish to with crocodiles as well as heron and macaque
monkeys.
At Sigiriya there
is the photogenic and dramatic fifth century
rock fortress rising out of the jungle plains.
Climb to the top for unbroken views in every
direction, and don't miss the cave frescoes.
Beruwela

waters from its well-tended home of lush, tropical gardens, this
tranquil hotel is perfect if you're looking for total relaxation
and well-deserved pampering. Top up your tan on golden sands
Negombo

of sand two kilometres from the coastal town of Negombo. See the
glittering Indian Ocean from your own private balcony and explore
striking coral reefs right nearby
