Vàlor in Granada

Lying between the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Mediterranean, the Alpujarra is renowned for tranquility, the purity of air and beautiful skies. The white-washed village of Valor is a reflection of the picture-perfect Spanish retreat that holidaymakers seek. Situated 900 meters above sea level, you can walk through almond, olive and chestnut groves in the cool of the evening, sample the local mineral water from natural springs, then relax in the picnic area near the old bridge.

Vàlor has a 16th century Mudéjar church, and the village’s Moros y los Cristianos is one of the most famous festivals in Spain, also dating from the 16th century. It involves the staging of a colourful re-enactment of the battle between the Moors and the Christians, and it also coincides with celebrations dedicated to Santo Cristo de la Yedra, the patron of the Alpujarras. Also be sure to check out the Cultural Festival in July if you get a chance, which ends with a massive paella in the Church square.

Facilities include 2 supermarkets selling locally grown produce amongst other fayre, and a range of bars and restaurants with outside terrace bars. All the bars in the area serve tapas and most offer a full menu with a wide choice of local cuisine.

The Alpujarra has a great sunshine record, and it is a popular retreat for Spanish families. A perfect destination for hill walking, painting, photography, birdwatching, astronomy, or just relaxing. The nearby villages of Berja and Ugijar also warrant a visit whilst you’re in the area.

Casa Patricio has a back garden and an adjoining garage. On the first floor there is a bathroom and 3 double bedrooms. One bedroom has a double bed, one has 2 single beds and the third bedroom has a single bed. The rear first floor room has a terrace which is great for having breakfast, relaxing and taking in the view. Both front bedrooms have balconies. The house is comfortably furnished and well equipped. Casa Concha is a 3 floor, 4 bedroom home situated in a quiet cul-de-sac overlooking the village of Valor, in an area called La Jarea. Cars can be parked closeby.

The traditional house has been sympathetically restored and modernised. It is spacious, light and airy. The house has an internal fountain and many original features such as beamed rooms and a fireplace.

The location and the structure of the building make it cool in the summer. In the cooler months the house is heated by a woodburning stove on the second floor and an open fire on the second floor.

The terrace is big enough for 6 people to sit and eat. On the terrace there is a spiral staircase leading to the roof terrace. The huge roof terrace has spectacular 180 degree views with a pergola to provide shade and furniture to relax or dine.

Being situated in the provence of Granada the area is realatively unspoilt and still retains a very Spanish feel.  It offers very good access to beaches and sightseeing, and is close to the villages of Nerja, Frigliana,and La Herradur.
