Fethiye
Fethiye is a fascinating cocktail of market town,
port and holiday resort dating back 3,000 years.
Tourism has had little impact on the town itself.
The harbour is bordered by a palm-lined promenade
where the locals meet in the shade to discuss the
events of the day.
This almost enclosed
inlet and natural harbour is protected by 12 islands
providing a safe haven for the many fishing boats,
yachts and water taxis. Behind the harbour, a maze
of back streets is filled with shops, bars and
restaurants.
Devastated by an
earthquake in 1958, this mostly modern town hosts
some magnificent age-old glories, including
awe-inspiring Lycian rock-face tombs, a fabulous
Roman amphitheatre and a ruined mountain fort.
The ruined fortress
keeps a watchful eye on the town from above and the
spectacular Lycian rock tombs brings tourists with
their cameras. Sunset is the best time to visit the
rock tombs. It is quite a climb up the steps but
worth it. Down near the harbour, are the remains of
a Roman theatre.
Take the 12 island boat
tour around the bay or catch a water taxi across the
bay to Calis Beach where you can
take to the water on a windsurfer or ringo, or flop
in the sun on a sand-and-shingle bay and swim in the
sparkling clear waters.
Further afield, a short
bus or boat ride will whisk you to the blissful
lagoon at Olu Deniz. It's 12
kilometres to exuberant Olu Deniz and the much
photographed lagoon, and just over the hill lies the
ghost town of Kayakoy.
Tuesday is market day along
the canal, but every day is shopping day along the
narrow, cobbled streets which snake through the old
town. In the evening stroll around the harbour
quarter for the best choice of restaurants and if
you have energy left to burn, then Hamam Sokak is
the street for nightlife

Just 17 kilometres outside a resort like Fethiye you can
still find tiny pockets of unspoilt Turkey like the rural
village of Uzumlu and, on its outskirts, Villa Yasemin.
Individual and modern though Villa Yasemin is, it was
sensitively designed by a local architect using stone, wood and
red roof tiles and as a result it sits perfectly with the
natural surroundings and the more traditional village buildings.
Peek out of any window in the villa and you'll be drawn outside
to admire the stunning mountain views.
Breakfast out on the terrace before making a
splash as you enter the pool for your first swim of the day.
And, in the afternoon take a stroll into the village to watch

made from silk or cotton
