Costa Tropical
Although not nearly so well known as the neighbouring Costa del Sol to the west the Costa Tropical lying in the Granada province has picturesque beaches and it is far easier to get away from the crowds.
   The mountains run right down to the sea and the coastline is typically made up of a series of coves. There is La Herradura, pretty and unspoiled, and located between Punta de la Mona and Cerro Gordo. The Costa takes its name from the sub-tropical climate which enables the growing of exotic fruits and crops such as avocadoes, oranges, sugar cane,lemons, custard apples, mangoes and bananas.
   Many tourists are starting to head east towards Costa Tropical where you can still find old Spain with small charming fishing villages and white mountain villages. One popular spot is the old town of Almuñécar born on a piece of land jutting out between the Rio Verde and Rio Seco. This land now separates Almunecar's principal beaches of Playa Puerta del Mar (Rio Verde) and, to the west of the town centre, the Playa San Cristóbal (Rio Seco). The two beaches are backed by cliffs supporting an Arab citadel and three large rocks jutting out to sea.
     Motril is the biggest town of the Costa Tropical and is handy for the Sierra Nevada and ski holidays in Spain. Nestling at the foothills of the Sierra Lujar mountains, Motril lies at the heart of the Costa Tropical which is one of the most lush and productive agricultural areas of Spain. It has two main beaches - the busiest being Playa Poniente and the quieter Playa Granada. There are also many sheltered coves, rocky inlets and itowering cliff faces along the coast making it popular with divers.

For golfers there's the nine-hole Los Moriscos course eight kilometres west of the town.
