The Costa Brava - the coast of the brave - deserves its name because its spectacular scenery. Lovely beaches often backed by steep cliffs, the Costa Brava starts at Blanes in the south and ends at Cadaques in the north.
The Costa Brava offers holidaymakers natural beauty, proximity to the great city of Barcelona, historic medieval villages, world-famous restaurants and excellent sports facilities including world famous golf courses and ski-ing in the Pyrenees. Away from the crowds you can venture to hidden inlets and coves and along rural routes for peace, isolation and local colour, or head to Barcelona.
The beautiful village of Tossa De Mar is home to two gorgeous sand and shingle beaches and its network of narrow cobbled streets and stunning mountainous backdrop add to it's charm.
The traditional resort of Pineda on the Costa de Barcelona has a lovely long beach which is generally un-crowded. Untouched by mass tourism, Calella de Palafrugell's steep winding streets and fishermen's cottages form the idyllic backdrop to a stunning section of coast.
Calella de Costa is proud of its beaches - Gran, Garbi and Les Roques beaches blend together to give three kilometres of spotless sand and the esplanade brims with bars and eateries. Estartit is a small resort of friendly hotels and apartments, edging up the sides of a wooded hillside with a resort centre of wide streets, a square beside the town church and a large dark golden beach.
Gerona, Girona or the City of Four Rivers goes under many names, but whatever name, travel to Gerona and you've got a wealth of culture at your feet including a fabulous gothic cathedral. Museums of art, cinema, archaeology and Jewish history. Little Llafranc has seen many famous people including Salvador Dali. Liz Taylor and Maggie Thatcher to name a few. Attractive and practically unscathed by tourism where private villas dot the pine covered hills.
Lloret de Mar has, not one, but five beaches all with golden sands and glittering clear water. The biggest is Lloret de Mar itself, one kilometre long, with a pretty tree lined promenade that's brimming with bars and restaurants.
Located in Costa del Maresme, Pineda is a traditional resort suited to those looking for a quiet and peaceful break. Platja d'Aro is beach lovers heaven with a main beach of soft golden sand that stretches on for two kilometres. A cluster of tiny coves like Cala del Cangers and Cala del Pi, where pines run all the way down to the sea and the quiet beauty of Sa Conca are among the attractions.
Stretched along the crescent of a four kilometre bay, Playa de Pals is a collection of elegant hotels and private villas. Skirting the edge of a gigantic beach. Sant Hilari Sacalm is a rural retreat, a tiny terracotta town set 800 metres up in the Les Guilleries mountains. Santa Susanna is a town of two halves. A flourishing seafront runs the length of the two kilometre beach but there is an old town set back from the sea, surrounded by fertile countryside, riddled with cobbled streets.
Tamariu is in a small bay, sheltered on both sides by richly wooded headland, a simple town of whitewashed houses and pavement cafes winding its way down the slopes to the sea.
