Fort Lauderdale, Miami, the Gold Coast - famous names trip off the tongue in a vaction on Floriday's Atlantic Coast.

   Dubbed 'the Venice of America', Fort Lauderdale has more canals than the Italian version. Jump on a water taxi, hopping off at the designer shops or at an inviting restaurant or stroll down to the shimmering shores where palms swish in the breeze and turquoise waters lap the bleached-white sands. There are some excellent museums housed in stylish modern buildings, as well as graceful houses with sub-tropical gardens.      Fort Lauderdale's most popular holiday pastimes centre on the beaches, shops and the glamorous yachts and luxury cruise ships. Classy boutiques and upmarket department stores cater for the international yachting crowd while bargain hunters will love the Swap Shop, a vast market where you can buy almost anything. The Riverwalk meanders through down town and there's eight unbroken miles of pale, soft sand. The surrounding area of Fort Lauderdale is blessed with 23 miles of long, soft, pale sandy beaches as well as 300 miles of canals and other waterways.

     Stroll along the boardwalk in South Beach early in the evening - the glamorous beach runs alongside fine white sands and  is a favourite spot for fashion shoots, and one of the places to be seen. But perhaps the most famous picture of Miami is of the Art Deco district, where painstakingly restored buildings are painted in ice-cream colors lining and the famous Ocean Drive. 

     For shopping, head to the open-air Lincoln Road Mall in South Beach, where a pedestrian strip is lined with jewelery and clothes shops and pavement cafes. Bal Harbour is another shopping hot spot with elegant, up-market boutiques. For tranquil city views, bike trails and great beaches, try Key Biscayne to the south of South Beach. And for swimmers visit you can't the Venetian Pool in Coral Gables, where an old quarry was transformed in the 1920s into a swimming paradise complete with waterfalls, palm tree islands and coral rock caves
