A true tropical paradise,
Antigua offers 365 superb white sand beaches surrounded
by well-preserved coral reefs, walls, and shipwrecks
which makes this island the perfect diving and
snorkeling destination. It also has two golf courses.
Antigua boasts one of the finest comfortable climates in the
West Indies. Average temperatures range year round
between 80°F/26°C (in February) to 85°F/28°C (in
August). The island of Antigua is a treasure trove of
the finest palm-fringed beaches and spectacular natural
beauty and is also renowned for it's water sports.
Antigua's historical attractions include Nelson's
Dockyard, where the great admiral sheltered his warships
in the late 18th century while St John's is the vibrant
capital and home to a number of fine colonial buildings
and a colourful market. The island is laden with a
colonial atmosphere, from the old stone windmills of
long-abandoned sugar plantations to the renovated naval
base.
Prime beach spots include Dickenson and Runaway
beaches, Half Moon Bay, Galleon Beach, Deep Bay,
Hawksbill Beach, Darkwood Beach and secluded Pigeon
Beach.
Other interesting places include the coral-encrusted
wreck of the Andes which lies in the middle of Deep Bay,
Falmouth Harbour, Indian Town, one of Antigua's national
parks, Great Bird Island which is an excursion from
Dickenson Bay and Fig Tree Drive, a scenic route.
Hit the nature trail and hike the well-tended footpath
up the hill from English Harbour to Shirley Heights,
where a dramatic panoramic view will reward you. Shirley
Heights is the place to be on a Sunday afternoon for the
ultimate live steel and reggae band experience.
Antigua is best visited in the cool, dry months of
mid-December to mid-April, the peak tourist season.
But for Antigua holiday fun at its best, travel during
Carnival, the biggest annual festival on the island,
between the first Monday and Tuesday of August.
Although the official currency is the East Caribbean
dollar, the US dollar is widely accepted. Antigua has
retained strong links to British traditions as well as
having English as its official language with a
delightful Antiguan dialect..
